About the conventional Mexican Guitarrón for Mariachi, we can also find quite interesting variations with a rich history. This VST plugin brings together 4 different Guitarrones: the traditional one, a reduced version used in Central America, the predecessor of the Guitarron, and a hybrid between two of Mexico's most popular instruments. Allow me to introduce them to you below...

MARIACHI GUITARRON.

The Mexican Guitarron is a musical instrument with strings invented in Mexico in the 19th century to play the bass section in Mariachi music. It resembles a guitar in shape and string arrangement but is larger, wider, and has a proportionally shorter neck. It uses six strings, which are tuned differently from those of a guitar, and is played by simultaneously plucking two strings to create a stronger and louder sound. The common tuning is A D G C E A.

4 STRING GUITARRON.

The 4-string Guitarrón is a rare instrument but is used in Central American countries to play Mariachi and other genres from those regions. Essentially, it's an acoustic bass tuned to D, meaning D G C F. This gives it a brighter sound as it's tuned 5 semitones above the traditional Mariachi Guitarrón.

GURGLY GUITARRON.

This peculiar and ancient instrument is the precursor to the Mariachi Guitarrón and Vihuela. It was played by the old Mariachis from the highlands of Jalisco and fell into disuse for over 50 years until it was revived and popularized by the Ancient mariachi of Acatic. Its enigmatic sound, similar to the sound of a filled water jug (hence its name), is tuned to D G B E, like conventional guitars, but with D and G one octave lower, giving it deep bass tones.

FIFTH GUITARRON.

This is a hybrid between a Mariachi Guitarrón and a Bajo Quinto (Fifth bass), which is an instrument used in Norteño and Tex Mex music.

UV Mexican Guitarrones features 1 preset with various options and effects, including:

  • Filter
  • Reverb
  • Delay
  • Delay Time
  • Feedback

The blue keys represent the active notes, but these may vary depending on the instrument and its number of strings. Each octave represents a string, which are as follows...

  • Mariachi Guitarron: A1 (C-1 to B-1), D2 (C0 to B0), G2 (C1 to B1), C3 (C2 to B2), E3 (C3 to B3), A2 (C4 to B4).
  • 4-string Guitarron: D2 (C-1 to B-1), G2 (C0 to B0), C3 (C1 to B1), F3 (C2 to B2), E3 (C3 to B3), A2 (C4 to B4).
  • Gurgly Guitarron: D2 (C-1 to B-1), G2 (C0 to B0), B3 (C1 to B1), E4 (C2 to B2).
  • Fifth Guitarron: A1 (C-1 to B-1), D2 (C0 to B0), G2 (C1 to B1), C3 (C2 to B2), F3 (C3 to B3), A2 (C4 to B4)

The functions of the yellow notes (octave 5) for each instrument are as follows...

  • Mariachi Guitarron: Play the standard technique of octave notes, from C to B, you will find them with their respective notes. To move the notes across the fretboard, you can use the light red keys located in octave 6.
  • 4-string Guitarron: The C6 and D6 keys (painted in a darker color) serve as a switch to activate the two available techniques for playing this instrument, which are picking and strumming.
  • Gurgly Guitarron: It functions the same as the conventional Guitarrón, with the only difference being that instead of playing octave notes, you can play the famous "gorgoreo" (which is a tremolo on the last string) characteristic of this Guitarron and move it across the fretboard with the light red keys.
  • Fifth Guitarron: This instrument does not have any special functions.

You can change the instrument with G#6 for Mariachi (standard), A6 for 4 strings, A#6 for Gurgly Guitarron and B6 for Fifth Guitarron. You can also change instruments by clicking on the Guitarron image.

I hope you enjoy it, and I will strive to improve and fix any issues the plugin may present. Until the next instrument! :)
